Thanks for purchasing the Ice Kold Tekno Orchestra! I have worked to bring you every sonic nuance of the Korg MS-20. These samples have been extensively tweaked to provide the best response in a midi sequencer/digital audio environment. The distinctive sounds of the MS-20 will add colors to your audio palette that no other synth can emulate. About This Disk This disk is a standard “Mixed Mode” CD-ROM and is compatible with all CD ROM players. Audio Section: There is an Audio Section that may be played from a standard CD Player (skip track one). You will hear the demos made while building the banks in full 44.1 Stereo. Data Section: The data section may be opened by right clicking your CD ROM’s desktop icon and selecting OPEN in the context menu. This section contains the SoundFont SF2 files and the Raw WAV files, each in their own directory. How to load a bank of SoundFonts: 1. Open the Audio HQ Utility 2. Click the SoundFont Icon 3. Make Sure "Static Caching" under the Options Menu is set larger than the SoundFont Bank you wish to load is. When you load the really long samples in the X-tra Large Bank you may need to add some overhead. 4. Go to SELECT BANK and choose the first open slot. If you forget to do this and if already have soundfonts in memory, you will erase them. 5. Under "Configure bank" click Load. A file selector will appear. Choose the SF2 file you wish to load into your computer's host memory. 6. Run your sequencer. The SoundFont banks will be accessible in both SB Live Synths "A" and "B". Use program changes in your sequencer to select different sounds. 7. Enjoy your state of the art classic analog MS-20 SoundFonts. How many SoundFont Banks can I load? You can have as many as 32 Megs of SoundFonts active at any given time on an SB Live/Value. Can I use these SoundFonts with my Awe64 Gold which has 16 megs of Ram? These banks have only been tested on the SB Live/ Live Value Cards. However, the banks under 16 megs should work. However, I do not advertise that they do as again, they have not been tested. I have included a special version of the Master Bank that is under 16 megs for testing purposes. I want to edit some sounds. How do I do this? You need to download Vienna 2.3 from the Creative Labs Site. Vienna will essentially turn this project into a software synth that you can program as much as you like, up to 128 MIDI banks of 128 presets each. Can I route a continuous controller, like CC 12 to the filter settings? Unfortunately, no. The SB Live does not support real time control over the filter except via velocity and, if routed through the LFO, aftertouch. The SB Live currently uses the SoundFont 2.01 protocol. When it is upgraded to 2.1 we will have real time control over filters. The current protocol does allow for real time control over effects via continuous controllers. Is there more documentation on the Samples, Instruments and Presets? Yes. If you download Vienna 2.3 there is a Print Preview function that will allow you to view and print each SoundFont Bank’s statistics. The amount of documentation is exhaustive. For example, the Main Bank consists of over 40 pages of documentation you can view and print. Will these SoundFonts load into Reality by Seer Systems? Most of the banks will load and play flawlessly. However, the largest banks, the Master Bank and the Drum N Bass Bank will not load. Reality appears to have trouble with .sf2 banks that have more than 128 sounds and have drum kits in the percussion section. Are you planning on adding more support to this project? How about some Sequencer environments? Studioware panels? MIDIfiles? I have initiated a web page at my site where I will upload items. Users who have developed support files for various sequencers may email them to me and I will put them up for us all to use. On your disk you will find support files for Logic, Cakewalk and Cubase. I’m having trouble with my SB Live Soundcard. It’s not working right. Go HYPERLINK "http://www.sblive.com/support/ownersfaq.html#newsf" here to Creative’s troubleshooting page Where can I find technical details on the SoundFont format? Here is the “white paper”. HYPERLINK ftp://ftp.creaf.com/pub/emu/sndfont.doc ftp://ftp.creaf.com/pub/emu/sndfont.doc Here’s the SoundFont Technical Specification HYPERLINK ftp://ftp.creaf.com/pub/emu/SFSpec200b.zip ftp://ftp.creaf.com/pub/emu/SFSpec200b.zip There are more files in that directory ftp://ftp.creaf.com/pub/emu/ Login as anonymous. No password is required. How do I load the supporting file into my sequencer? Please read the section of your manual that came with your sequencer. My notes below cannot go into all the details. Logic: Open the supplied .LSO file in Logic. Open the Environment. Find the Multi-instrument with the patchnames. COPY the multi-instrument. Close the Song if you want. Open your Autoload.LSO. Open an appropriate place in the environment. Use the Paste Command. You’re done! Cakewalk: Note you may no longer have to load this file if you have the newer version of Cakewalk. I believe it now supports multiple banks of presets without an .ins file. Normally, if you load the SoundFonts from within Cakewalk rather than from the Audio HQ, single banks will load fine, with names in the appropriate places. You don't need to do anything else. However, the Cakewalk protocol only recognizes one bank of patch names per bank. My Master bank has five banks. To get the names in without typing them all in, here's what you do: Double click on a MIDI track. The track properties box opens. Click "instruments", the "Assign Instruments" box will open. Scroll down in the right box to "SoundFont Device". Double click it to open the directory. Click "Import". Locate the Ice Kold Master Bank.ins file on the CD and load it. You should see the entries for the different banks. On the right side of the window, open the "Patch names" directory. You should see SF-ICE: Ice Kold Master b1 SF-ICE: Ice Kold Master b2 SF-ICE: Ice Kold Master b3 SF-ICE: Ice Kold Master b4-GM SF-ICE: Ice Kold Master b5 From the LEFT side of the window and open the directory called "SoundFont Device". Then open the directory called "Patch names for banks". Drag the above files from the right side of the window to the left side. A box will pop up and ask which bank you want to assign it to. Just select the number in the title of the bank. If you do not have experience with this rather complicated operation, you should read the appropriate section of the Cakewalk manual. Cubase VST Lots of people think Cubase only supports the “B” Synth in the SB Live. Actually, Cubase supports both synths, but only gives you names in the B synth. To get names in the A Synth you need a device file (.DEV file) that is made in Dmaker. I have supplied a .dev file for the Master bank. I think it works better than the pop up menu as you can leave it open and audition patches with the cursor keys. To load it, go to MODULES, then STUDIO MODULE, then SETUP. Click ADD. Find the .DEV file on the CD Rom and load it. Assign the Output to A: SBLIVE. You are done! What are some of the uses of the .WAV files? Here are some ideas: Load them into your sampler Use them with your Alesis Soundbridge to burn them to a Flash Ram card, then tweak them in your QS8, QS7 or QSR Put a couple of the short ones in your Windows directory and use them as system sounds. Drop the longer drones and pads into your digital audio sequencer as a track and add effects with plugins. Load the long samples into your digital audio editor and cut them up to make new MS-20 Samples. Use the WAV files to make your own custom SoundFont Banks mixed with other samples you have. Why do you distribute your disks on CDRs rather than on factory burned CD ROMs? By putting the disk on CDR’s I have the flexibility to add to the project with new presets and banks. It also keeps the costs down for you and for me. This is a small operation. Ice Kold SoundFonts is only sold over the Internet and I intend to keep it that way. Going commercial with a disk like this in such small runs would likely raise the price over $70, would add distributors and middle men and retailers into the equation, and all sorts of other problems I’d rather not deal with. I think when you compare you will find that my SoundFonts are at a higher standard of quality than any others are you will find commercially available. I give you lots more than my competitors do for a lot less. This is due to using the CDR format and my commitment to giving you an excellent product at an extremely reasonable price. What is my license to use these sounds? All of these sounds are guaranteed to be original, hand tweaked by me in my studio on my Org MS-20. No sounds were brought in from other collections or authors. The purchaser of this disk is has a copy that bears my signature. That is your license to freely use these sounds on any project, commercial or otherwise. You may sell this disk as long as you provide the buyer with the original copy and do not keep any copies. By doing so, you transfer the license. This disk may NOT be copied to be given away or sold. Of course you can copy these banks to your hard drive for your personal use. By allowing you to sell this disk I feel I am being more liberal than the typical sound developer. So, please, don’t rip me off. Thanks Again, enjoy these!
