What kind of keyboard do I need?
You need one with a MIDI out.  If you are just using software synths you can get away with a small controller keyboard (that has no sounds of its own).  I think its a good idea to have at least one device that makes sounds on its own and the keyboard is a logical place for that.  There are 61, 76, and 88 key keyboards.  For more, see my article on keyboards?
