Open Labs

Open Labs was showing the MiKO and NEkO portable multimedia production and playback instruments.  These are basically computer/keyboard/controller workstations.

The NEkO, shown above, can run any PC software of your choice.  One of the dsiplays was running Cubase.  You can add more elements, like custom controllers, to the upper left and right of the above display model, giving some flexibility.  The MiKO portable media workstation lists at $2499 and uses a Presonus Firebox as its mounted audio interface.  The high end NeKo LX has a 10x10 and a huge number of controllers based around an internal Dual Core Athlon (2gHz).  Find out more at their site at www.openlabs.com

Yamaha

Yamaha breaks new ground again in the Stage Piano arena with the CP300.  Like you'd expect from Yamaha, the unit played wonderfully.  Note the built in 16 track sequencer and USB connectivity

Introducing the CP300 Stage Piano

  • 88-key Graded Hammer keyboard with authentic touch
  • State-of-the-art AWM tone generation system
  • Maximum polyphony of 128 notes
  • 50 original Voices, plus 480 XG Voices and 12 Drum Kits
  • Five-band Master EQ, with panel sliders
  • Reverb, Chorus and other effects, including Delay, Rotary Speaker and Auto Wah
  • Comprehensive MIDI functions
  • Four pedal connectors for maximum expression, and full set of real-time controllers – including sliders and Pitch Bend/Modulation wheels
  • Built-in high-quality stereo speaker system
  • A powerful Performance mode for storing and recalling your custom CP300 settings
  • Built-in 16-track sequencer for recording
  • Master mode, for independent control of up to four external tone generators
  • Balanced XLR outputs
  • USB terminal – letting you connect to a computer for recording of your performances, creating/arranging of songs, and converting to notation

Though its not exactly Summer new, I got a few minutes to look at the S90ES again, and I have got to say this is one beautiful instrument. It just emanates pure class.  If Piano is important and you need a strong MIDI synth, but don't need sampling and audio recording on it, I think this will make one extremely happiest in the long run.
