My Favorite Vintage Soft Synths

Enter the VV world (Virtual Vintage Synths)

by Tweak

There are vintage synth collectors.  And vintage software synth collectors.  One of them sleeps better at night.  Can you guess who?  We'll answer that later on.

I was recently on ebay and saw a non-working Arp 2600, like the one modeled below, selling for 4 grand.  The problem was when they tried to restore it, the circuit board traces fell off due to old age.  It's got to be an aggravating hobby for the people in deep.  I mean, do dare turn on that MemoryMoog and risk the board blowing up (again).  I myself have a Korg MS20 that I never turn off.  Why?  Because I don't want to have to turn it on.  If we were to add up how much it would cost to acquire the great synths on the next 2 pages I think we'd be at about $20-25,000.  You can have all the software versions for about $1100-1500, depending on how well you shop.

Arp 2600V

Arturia ARP 2600 V Software Synth (Macintosh and Windows)

The ARP 2600 is one of the finest analog synthesizers ever made. Celebrated by the most respected musicians over the last thirty years, it is capable of creating amazing sounds, heard in numerous popular tunes from Herbie Hancock to Stevie Wonder.

Tweak: The Arp 2600 is pne of the most fun soft synths you can get.  Its got an ultra vintage sounding sequencer/arpeggiator that unlike the original will sync to MIDI.  This is a fully modular synth that you patch cables into various sections to route your signal.  Tweak it up 70's style when this synth had THE sound everyone wanted.   The Arp 2600V and the MS20 in the korg Legacy Analog edition, along with an obligatory MiniMoog V would make one very happy in terms of 70's vintage sound generation.

Arturia CS80V CS 80 Emulator VSTi (Macintosh and Windows)
The Arturia CS-80V is the reproduction of the legendary Yamaha(R) CS-80, which is considered by many as the "ultimate polyphonic synthesizer".

Tweak: The Yamaha CS80 is the original beast.  At 200lbs you have to wonder how many roadie's back injuries it caused.  I saw one in a store many years ago, sitting used, selling at $3,000.  The store would not let anyone play it.  No wonder. It had 2 cooling fans built into the piece.  This beast is fat, thick, and has a huge sonic footprint.

Jupiter 8V

Arturia Jupiter 8 V Software Synth (Macintosh and Windows)

The Jupiter-8V is the newest addition to the family Arturia’s analog synthesizer recreations. Offering the unique sound palette of the Roland Jupiter 8, this virtual version is a sound designer's dream.

Arturia Minimoog V Software Synth (Macintosh and Windows)
From the starship funk lead lines of the 70's, to the gangster whine of mid 90s hip-hop, the ever present minimoog has been making its phat presence felt for over 3 decades. In partnership with Bob Moog, Arturia decided to reproduce the legendary interface with the same look and feel than the original because of its particular "mood", and because many musicians wish to use the same interface they used in the past. But the reproduction of this synthesizer does not stop to the look and feel, Arturia also recreated its inside characteristics...

Tweak:  i had a Moog Prodigy with the famous Moog filter and sold it for $75 bucks so I could get a prophet 610.  Stupid! Since then I have learned, never sell your old synths.  But I don't feel bad sonic wise.  I could never keep the prodigy in tune for more than 20 minutes.  The MiniMoog V above never slips on ya.  And it has the sound of that famous moog filter. the moog oscillator plus the noise oscillator, those quirky evevelopes.  I just love tweaking this one.

Pro 53

Native Instruments NI Komplete Bundle (Macintosh and Windows)
KOMPLETE 5 is the high-end collection of 11 ground-breaking synthesizers, samplers, emulations, and a virtual guitar studio. Perfect for both studio and stage - this is the industry-standard bundle for serious musicians, producers and sound designers. KOMPLETE 5's instruments can be heard on platinum-selling records and in underground clubs alike, all over the world.

Tweak:  Is this the best Native instruments has done?  It might be.  Its darn good!  Stable!  And it sounds like my old prophet 610 but better.    Go ahgead and blindfold me.  I'll pick out the prophet every time, but I'll have a hard time figuring out if I am listening to hardware or software.  Incredible detail. They nailed the Prophet 5.
